Show Iffi J. THOMPSON IS HIED IT TO BE II SLACKER The case against Harry James Thompson, suspected of being a draft evader, was dismissed by United ! States Commissioner W. H. Recder. today after Thompson had proved to I the satisfaction of the couiit that he j is 34 years of ago and thus not liable) to drafting. Thompson was arrested September 6 , on suspicion of being an evader of the military draft through not registering on June 5. He was given a prellmin-1 ary hearing before Judge Reeder and his bond fixed at $1,000. This bond was furnished with two prominent Og-den Og-den bankers as endorsers. Thompson's Thomp-son's trial was then set for September Septem-ber 28. On trial today he showed the record of his birth in the family Bible, which gave it as September 18, 1883. His brother, Orton Thompson of San Fran-J Cisco, was also present at tho trial nnd . gave testimony that Harry B. Thompson Thomp-son was born on September 18, 1S83. An affidavit from his mother from Ontario, Canada, to the effect that she 1 was his mother and that he was born ! on the date specified in the Bible was also introduced. In the face of this evidence Judge Reeder felt the court could not do otherwise than dismiss tho case against Thompson and tho bond was ordered removed. This case attracted considerable attention at-tention in the county, as the officers arresting Thompson thought thoy bad a clear case against him. They alleged al-leged that a registration certificate made out by him for a recent election stated his birth at a date which would make him liable to military duty, although al-though be stoutly maintained at tho time that he was past 31. Thompson conducts a rooming house with his wife in Ogden. |
