Show SEVENTEEN CARS OF OIL ARE USED Due to the placing in service of extra ex-tra trains to handle the unprecedented unprecedent-ed volume of freight traffic on the Soutlfhrn Pacific railroad; the keeping keep-ing of sufficient fuel oil on hand at the supply points haH become an unusually un-usually important question According to the daily 'records at the headquarters of the Salt Lake division di-vision of the Southern Pacific In Ogden Og-den 17 cars or 213,696 litems of oil are being used daily in the operation I of trains between Sparks, Nev and I Ogden and on the branch lines of the division. The oil is brought from the Bakersfield, Cal fields and u vol-umo vol-umo consumed daily on the Salt Lake division involves an outlay of be-tween be-tween $4000 and $5000 For power developing; purposes, four barrels of oil 42 gallons per barrelIs bar-relIs the equivalent of a ton of coal and Its use marks an initial saving of between 15 and 25 cents, aside from lessening the labor of the fireman fire-man and being more advantageous to use in other ways. The oil generates a greater degree of heat than does coal and for this reason, danger of "burning up" the engines was an important im-portant question considered when it was first put Into use. This danger, however, has now been virtually eliminated elim-inated by the education of the Southern South-ern Pacific firemen in the use of the oil and through regular inspection by experts. - nn |
