Show DEATH CALLS FORMERSENATOR John M. Thurston, Nationally Prominent Republican, Dies in Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha, Neb., Aug. 9. John M. Thurston, former senator from Nebraska, Ne-braska, and nationally prominent Republicans, Re-publicans, died here at 4 o'clock this morning, He had been critically ill for four weeks, following a heat prostration, pros-tration, and his death had been momentarily mo-mentarily expected for several days. Thrombo-phlebltis was the immediate cause of death, according to a statement state-ment by the attending physicians, Dr. F. J. Schlier. His wife and two daughters were at the bedside when Senator Thurston died. Was McKlnley's Adviser. Thurston was bom at Montpelier, Vermont, August 21, 1S47. He was one of President McKinley's closest advisers and was regarded by McKIn-ley McKIn-ley as one- of tho country's ablest men. During his service In congress Thurston won national notice as an orator. A speech he made in'the senate sen-ate precipitated tho Spanish-American war. After finishing his term in the senate, sen-ate, Thurston opened offices in Wash-I Wash-I Ington and practiced law until 1915, when his 'health failed. He returned re-turned to Omaha and' resumed the practice of law, but his falling health handicapped him greatly. Served as Chairman. Mr. Thurston was temporary chairman chair-man of the Republican party convention conven-tion In 1888 and several times served as a delegate at large to the party's conventions. He was elected to the senate In 1894. Ho was at one time solicitor-general of tho Uunlon Pacific railroad. In 1872 Thurston was married to Miss Martha Poland, daughter of Colonel Col-onel Luther Poland of Omaha. She died In 1898, and tho next year he was married to Lola, daughter of William J. Purman, former congressman congress-man from Florida, who survives him, on |
