"14. We disapprove the democratic democrat-ic policy in time of peace of taxation taxa-tion upon special articles a tariff law constructed in accordance with Republican principles would produce, as It has always produced, under Republican Re-publican administration, sufficient revenue to carry on the operations of the government without resort to vexatious taxation such as that contained con-tained in the so-called emergency revenue rev-enue act. "15. We denounce the attempt of the Democratic administration to in- terferc with and abridge the Just rights of the settlers upon the former Uintah Indian reservation to the use and control of the waters which they have appropriated for Irrigation, and wo do declare that In the matter ot the appropriation and use of these waters as well as all other waters within the state, the stato law la supreme. su-preme. Wo believe that the public schools of the state should be kept entirely free from partisan politics and tc that end we favor' the nonpartisan non-partisan selection of the state superintendent super-intendent of public instruction. "17. The home brings to Its owners own-ers no income. Yet the safety and perpetuity of every republic Is guaranteed guar-anteed where the people own their own homes and Is undermined where the burden of taxation is so great as to threaten the ownership of the home by those of moderate means. We therefore pledge our governor and legislature to the enactment of such laws on taxation as shall encourage the ownership by the people of their homes and small farms." A Salt Lake county delegate named Rich asked to amend the platform with a plank "condemning the action of the president in attempting to interfere in-terfere with the laws of the state of Utah and their execution and praising prais-ing Governor William Spry and the board of pardons in carrying out those laws In the Hlllstrom case." The amendment was voted down but one offered by Glenn Miller commending com-mending the work of the senators and congressmen from Utah in obtaining obtain-ing passage of legislation for Utah, carried. The platform was then put to vote and adopted. oo |
