Show 1 ' IL-GL11G ! B! AUTOMOBILES i Saxon-Six and an Overland- j j Four Make 45-degree Grade ! ; 300 Feet in Less Than ! 22 Seconds Other ' Cars Climb. I II ! tAn interesting automobile contest was staged by some of the automobile ' dealers of the city yesterday after-. after-. noon when the Thirty-second street ! hill was successfully scaled by a num-1 num-1 her of machines at a good rate of speed. Of, course the hill was ascend-i ascend-i ed on low gear, as it was shown that it was quite out of the question to ' make it on the intermediate and an , ; utter impossibility to run the cars on lr high. The contest of greatest interest was brought about through a little boasting on the part of Jack Browi ing and Bill Martin as to whether an :k Overland-four could make the hill as rapidly as a Saxon-six. A small wager was made and the machine made the , run under flag and stop-watch regu- ': latlons. The distance covered was !. about 300 feet and the grade was es- !; timated to be at least 45 degrees. ; The first run was a tie between tho two machines in the remarkably short time of 23 1-5 seconds. In the I secbnd trial the Saxon made the run , in 21 2-5 seconds and the Overland .;- in 21 3-5 seconds, the former winning . by the close margin of a fifth of a j second. ; A trial between the two machines for(a short distance and over the steepest part of the grade was made I and tho machines tied in the time f of 18 seconds. The Saxon appeared to have the best, of the race on a low grade start. Both exhibitions showed the merits of the two cars for hill- I climbing. k On the intermediate gear neither machine could go more than about half way up tho hill, a Dodge-four f perfoimlng the same feat. Tho lat- ter machine also made the short run up the hill in 18 aeconds. Harry Lindoll drove a Dodge over , tho hill with five passengers and a . Hupmobilc with four in the car. Manager Man-ager W. B. Taylor of tho Cadallic company gracefully scaled the hill with a Cadillac-eight with five pas- I I seiigors aboard. I It la expected that other contests i ; and exhibitions will bo made by the k j dealers. |
