The storm hn. cleared and, by patching horses, the posse hopes to cover the intervening interven-ing distance and reach Bluff by Friday Fri-day noon. Men and horses are in good shape, despite the hard going today. The feeling is tense. Men arc anxious for battle. As a precaution against ambush, five deputy United States marshals have been hiding for the last week in the rocks near the stronghold of the renegade Indians near Bluff, Utah, keeping watch on every mou ment of the outlaw band until United States Marshal Aquila Nebeker shall arrive with his posso. According to word received here yesterday, Marshal Mar-shal Nebeker posted the five deputies depu-ties as spies upon the Indians as soon as his attempt to surprise them was foiled by a heavy storm and before he went to Cortez, Colo., to arrange for the raising of a posse there. Through the posted spies Marshal Nebeker has kept informed of the doings of the Indians. When a second sec-ond posse, gathered at Grayson. I'tah, Is joined by the posse from Cortez. tho marshal will be in a position, posi-tion, it Is believed, to take swift ac tion against the belligerents. Preparation Prepara-tion of a deadly trap for the posse by the Indians was the thing to be mot feared, according to those n quainted with the country and tho habits of the outlaws. Material a6 sistance Is beinp lent to the scouts under the marshal's orders by Btioh cowboys as are venturesome enough to attempt spying upon the Indians Reports received last night from Bluff by couriers to Cortez are to the effect that Hatch and his band of outlaws have begun killing cattle and sheep belonging to white settlers in that vicinity The Indians are h:iiu to be acting with impunity because o the fact that they outnumber the whites in the Bluff neighborhood. Equipped With Food. The posse which left Cortez yesterday yester-day morning is equipped with food, camp supplies and 12,000 rounds of ammunition The men gathered by Marshal Nebeker at Grayson are similarly simi-larly equipped and are waiting at i that point for the arrival of the Coloradans Scouts have been scat I tered along the route between Grayson Gray-son and Bluff to guard any possible surprise from the Indians, should they leave their mountain entrenchments, and to act as guides to the combined posses when the latter start on their final march. Failure of the plan of Marshal Nebeker Neb-eker to surprise the Indians when, with five deputies, he started from Cortez a fortnight ago was caused by a terrific storm that resulted iu failure fail-ure of the posse to meet in time to descend upon the -Indian camp before daylight of the chosen morning For fear of arousing the suspicions of any wandering Indians that the might meet, the little posse was split into two parties as it approached Bluff and two of the men who took a circuitous cir-cuitous route became lost in the storm. rvrv 1 |
