Show uw GENERAL STOESSEL IS CALLED BY DEATH Iondon. .Turn 17. 11:80 p. m The death of Lieutenant General Anatole Mikhajlovitch Stoesscl, the defender of Port Arthur, Is announced in a Petrograd dispatch to Router's Telegram Tele-gram company. General Stoessel had suffered from paralysis for several months. Lieutenant General Stoessel was famous fa-mous as the commander of the Russian Rus-sian troops at Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese war. After he had held out there, for mouths against the furious onslaughts of the Japan eBe, Stoessel. his ammunition supph exhausted and his men virtually without with-out food, surrendered the fortress to General Nog1. For this action he was condemned to death on February L'0, 1908, by a court-martial This sentence, however, was commuted by Emperor Nicholas to ten years' imprionsment. He was released from confinement from the fortress of St Peter and SL Paul the following year by order of Emperor Em-peror Nicholas. |
