Show -oo FIFTY YEARS OF GOOD WORK Many years have gone by since the Standard received the first copy or the San Francisco Chronicle as an "exchange." "ex-change." For 25 years, of which we have personal knowledge, the paper has been coming to this office and this morning that publication, In an extra large wrapper proved to be the golden jubilee and exposition edition, gay in colored illustrations and brilliant bril-liant in subject matter One division is devoted to a history' of the paper, in which the announcement is made that M. H DeYoung, one of the two brothers who established the Chronicle Chron-icle on January' 16. 1865, retains active control, being the only man that has ever remained in continuous supervision supervi-sion and ownership of any paper for so long a period. It is a remarkable ret urn uiautf luuet (.icuuuii: uy i ca- son of the fact that during nearly all that half century the Chronicle has been recognized as one of the most reliable, best edited publications In the United States. In politics, the Chronicle has been a persistent source of Republican strength on the Pacific coast and a power in the party in the nation. There are two features of the Chronicle which always have held our admiration. The editorial page 13 devoid of the freakish and the news columns are reliable and well written. writ-ten. The paper evidently has a presiding pre-siding genius, who represents its soul, imparting honor, merit, consistency. Few men have been able to build up an Institution of the Influence and real worth of the Chronicle, and M. H DeYoung is entitled to look back over his fifty years and, then taking note of today, feel a pride in his achievements. |
