Show j DR. E. G. GOWANS CLEARS I THE ATMOSPHERE. There is general rejoicing over the repudiation by Dr. E G. Gowans of the movement to collect money from the teachers of the public schools in ! order to pay the expenses of the non- partisan candidate for superintendent of public instruction. In an interview in Salt Lake last Saturday, Dr. Gowans is quoted as ; personally arranging to take care of the campaign deficit "I did not know anything at all about the John M Mills letter," said , Superintendent Gowans, "until I saw was wTltten and sent out without my If 4 knowledge. And further, I may say ! that I cannot understand what Mr. J Millg was about in sending it. It certainly has resulted in the most ! embarrassing feature of the whole I matter of my candidacy and election "I endeavored to reach Mr. Mill? j by telephone today to learn his views J on the subject, but was unable to I do so I was told he was out of I Ogden Tor a day or two. I shall re- jj quest him to withdraw the request ho has 9ent out, by writing another let- I ter to every person to whom the first letter was sent. The debt was in- I curred by the campaign committee I which was urging my candidacy, and 4 tbey mentioned the matter to me and j I told them that I would take care of I it. I have taken care of it, and I I cannot understand Mr. Mills' object at all in sending out the letter." I Dr. Gowans has done the right thing. He has saved himself from the stultification of being under obligation ob-ligation to those over whom he is expected ex-pected to have a supervisory authority, author-ity, and he has relieved the teachers I from the embarrassment of deciding I whether to contribute or be subjected j to a disciplining which might take any one of several different forms, from mild disfavor to severe reproot and complete ostracism. |
