IBBj During the brilliant operations on the Shat-el-Arab river (formed by the confluence of the Tigria and Euphrates) which resulted, late in November, in the capture of Basra, several actions were fought on the right DH bank of the river. Basra, which is some fifty-five miles from the Persian gulf, la a famous port, serving Bagdad and Mesopotamia generally, and is tho center of the date trade. The Caliph Omar founded it, and the BR real Sindbad the Sailor once lived there. B
