Show MUST MARRY OR BE TRIED ON SERIOUS OFFENSE ' In the matter of tho estate and guardianship of John G. Hazen, a minor, mi-nor, for the purpose of securing a license li-cense for him to marry Nellie Field, Mrs. Hattie Irwin, Hazen's sister, has been appointed guardian. Hazen Is said to be 19 years of age. Ho was returned to Ogden a short time ago from Torrlngtou, Wyo., charged with Improper conduct with MIbb Field. Since his return to Ogden Og-den and his incarceration in tho county coun-ty jail, he and Miss Field have expressed ex-pressed a willingness to get married, but Hazen could not procure a marriage mar-riage license because he was under age. His parents are dead. The necessity of a guardian was obvious, but there iB still a question as to whother tho young people may marry. The officers Insist that Hazen should pay the cost of his extradition from Wyoming or be prosecuted for the offense. of-fense. If tho prosecution Is taken up. Mlas Field will be tho most Important witness. wit-ness. If she should marry Hazen. there is a question as to whether her testimony would ibo permissible. It at least would be quite Ineffectual, as she would bo an unwilling witness. On the other hand, Miss Field made an affidavit that Hazen's return to Utah would be solely for tho purpose of prosecution for tho offense charged, and not for the settlement of other differences. However, the officers are willing to dismiss the action If Hazen will marry the girl and pay the cost of his extradition. This afternoon Hazen was released from the county jail to go to the county clerk's office to procure a license li-cense to marry Miss Field. The license li-cense was granted, Mrs. Irwin acting as guardian, the parties giving their age as 19. In company with Deputy Sheriff Charles ' Ellsworth, the young couple went to the municipal court and were Immediately married by Judge W. H. Reeder, Jr., after which Hazen was arraigned on the charge against him. He pleaded guilty, and a suspended sentence was given. Hazen will not be required to pay the cost of extradition. |
