I GOLDEN TEXT: AgTee with thine Adversary quickly when thou art in the way with him. THE PARABLE OP THE THREE WISE KINGS. 1. And it came to pass that there were three wise kings which ruled over a great city. And. on a certain day they sat in the synagogue waiting wait-ing for such as might approach unto them. 2. And while It was yet in the heat of the day and they were loth to bo walking to and fro, there came unto them a great Devlne light which spake unto them, saying: 3. "Wherefore sit ye idly with r folded hands? Know ye not that in thirty years the great franchise of ; the Merchants' Light & Stunt com-i com-i pany shall pass away and then that great darkness shall come upon the ; city? And know ye not that thirty years is but as a day?" 4. And when they heard the voice ; they were sore afraid. For they knew that the Dcvine Light was filled with many watts and kilowatts, and meters me-ters and amperes and ohms and razors raz-ors and horsepowers and franchises and strange and occult devices with which to entray the unwary. 5. And to save themselves from the fear which had come upon them they covenanted with themselves to put one over on the people. 6. And on the next day they came again to the synagogue and whilo they were yet there Kelly came also and he entreated them not to do this thing, for ho had heard that which they were conspiring among then selves to do. 7. And there came with him, alsi his companions, Olin of the tribe of Kennedy, and Hyrum of the tribe of Belnap and James the son of Brum-mitt Brum-mitt and S. S. the son of Smith, and they beseeched the three great rulers not to do this evil thing against tho multitude. 8. And each of them spake in his turn and when they had finished the three great rulers spake deceitfully unto them that the thing should not come to pass .until yet a fortnight 9. But as soon as Kelly and his companions were gone their way, the i three great wise rulers sent word to them to come again to tho synagogue on the morrow as it was not meej to wait longer lest the plague of darkness should come upon them. 10. And again did Kelly and his companions come to tho synagogue and spake to the three wise rulers. But their hearts were hardened and thoy became wroth at Kelly and his companions, while they were yet speaking. 11. And they took Kelly and scourged him and drove a nail In his face, even ono like unto a railroad spike. And they cast him out. 12. And they smote Hyrum, he of the tribe of Belnap, with a long pole. And they cast him out. 13. And Olin of the tribe of Kennedy Ken-nedy did they also scourge and plugged plug-ged his teeth with zinc, even like unto un-to that which is found in the land of Promontory And they cast him out. And straight-way did Kelly and all his companions beat It, while yet, verily tho beating was good. 14. And when they were gone their way, then did Samuel brother of he of many sheckels speak unto him which sate on the right of him saying: say-ing: "Peace, Alpheus, count tho clock. And Alpheus the great ruler looked upon the clock, which was a Ford, and salth. "The clock hath stricken three." 15. For then they knew that at four o'clock of that day the evil thing was to be pushed over. And when It was four o'clock they pushed It over upon tho multitude. 16 And they took a cruse and an nolnted themselves with oil lest they should be unclean for fifty years. And each of them tapped himself upon his head saying, "No one dwelleth therein," there-in," which was interpreted to mean, no one home. 17. And on that day the veil of the synagogue was rent in twain and a great gloom came over the city. And on that night did the stars wink one to the other and sang together "Has Anyone Seen Kelly." |
