Show mm LYNCHING STILL CONSIDERED Cobb County Grand Jury Calls Witnesses to Tell What They Know. Mnnetta, Ga.. Sept 1 The Cobb county grand Jury assembled today to investigate the lynching of Leo M. Frank and Like up its regular work. Judge Patterson, In his charge, told the jury it was not a special grand Jury and that while its members were not to feel they were secret service men. it was their duty to ferret out any crime alleged to have been committed com-mitted within the county, "fearlessly and without hope of reward." The judge took occasion to defend Cobb county against attacks upon it growing grow-ing out of the lynching. In his charge he said: "In a great deal that has been said recently in the press, the facts have been deviated from and I want to strongly assert that the press generally gener-ally has done Cobb county a great injustice in-justice It appears that in a great deal of the matter that has been published pub-lished some newspaper correspondents correspond-ents have seemingly gotten just as far away from the truth as they could 'and tho result has been that Cobb county has been made to suffer for It "It has been published broadcast over the world that a Ivnching has recently occurred in Cobb county It is your duty to make a thorough ,and complete investigation of that, as it is of all charges of crime when brought to vour attention." Judge Paterson did -not mention Frank's name. Thirty-five witnesses witness-es have been called. The jury will begin work on the case today. Among tlie witnesses summoned are O. B Keeler, a newspaper man, who will be asked to tell how ho came in possession .if Frank's wedding ring which he savs was mysteriously delivered de-livered to him with a request from Frank to sco that it was returned to Mrs Frank; W. K. Swanson sheriff of Cobb county; G. M Hicks, the deputy dep-uty 'who took charge of Frank's body immediately after It was found, Major Ma-jor E P Dobbs and II. L. Looney. chief of police of Marietta. Subpoenas have been Issued for T. E, Patterson. B. E Davidson and E. L. llainey. members of ttio state prison pris-on commission, who were at the prison pris-on farm the night Frank was taken away. . nn |
