Show OC) ONE OKLAHOMA IDEA- (Butto Post) Oklahoma has given birth to many radical Ideas In govornment, such as tho fixing of tho prico of oil at the woll by the stato, but never has an Oklahoman given expression to views quito as radical as whon Gov. Robert U Williams, at the conferenco of governors, gov-ernors, urgod that a governor shall not bo ellglblo to a candidacy, during his term of office or for six months thereafter, for the United States senate, sen-ate, for congress or for any other stato office. Of course, we all can understand what the Oklahoma governor was thinking about whon he evolved his 5cheme for regulating the ambitions 5f governors. We all havo seen men olected to the chief office of a stato sacrificing tho best lntorests of their constituents while they themselves havo been busily engaged In building up political machines that would boost them Into tho American house of lords, Just as wo have soon presidents presi-dents who were open to tho suspicion suspi-cion of using the peoplo's time Infixing In-fixing things for a renomlnation and re-election. But most of us will seriously se-riously doubt whether It Is within the province of govorndrs or governed govern-ed to put a limit upon any natural, and usually laudable, ambition entertained enter-tained by an American citizen, whether wheth-er ho be president or a man in private pri-vate life. . It may be taken as a fact that in this day, when the masses read much and consider much the qualifications of men aspiring to public service, few governors, or, for that matter, few men In any other position, can neglect tho public Interest in order to gain political advancement and get away with it The governor who puts in his timo laying his pipes for the United Uni-ted States senate Is very apt to discover dis-cover that he has gotten too far from public confidence to hope to achieve anything which he might Imagine was more desirable than that which tie already possesses. |
