Show STATE NEWS 1 urn mm SEES UTAH FRUIT Provo, July 5. A. A. Barnes, banker, bank-er, manufacturer and promoter of in-terurban in-terurban roads of Indianapolis, came to Provo this morning with W. C. Al-bertson Al-bertson to spend the day before returning re-turning eist from an extensive trip through Washington, Oregon and California. He came to Utah county to look over the Elberta peach district dis-trict and, after seeing some of the orchards, decided to come to Provo for a short visit This morning Mr. Barnes, In company com-pany with ex-Mayor Ray, C E Loose and Mr. Albertson, took an extensive trip through the fruit districts of this neighborhood. He said that ir. all his travels through the Pacific Northwest and California he had not seen such splendid cherry and apple orchards Ho stated that he was more than surprised. This afternoon he took another trip to show his wife the orchards and the scenery This afternoon he said that what the people needed most was an In-terurban In-terurban lino, similar to the ones In operation near Indianapolis and othor eastern towns, as theso roads make It possible for the farmers to rush thoir crops to the market with only short hauls for thoir teams, and to save an immense part of the cost of production In raising fruits and vegetables. In speaking of tho interurban situation sit-uation here, he said that there are enough people In Utah county to make a road very profitable without applying apply-ing to Salt Lake for a franchise an that, through the development of this section by an Interurban road, tho county would advance much more rapidly and soon become independent of Salt Lako and Salt Lako influence. When told of tho terms of the franchise fran-chise the Salt Lak o commissioners Imposed, Mr. Barnes was emphatic In his statements that there was probably no city in the country where such tax was Imposed upon a company com-pany for building an interurban road. At Indianapolis tho Interurban companies com-panies have arranged with the city electric roads to haul their passengers and freight to tho city limits, whilo the other companies take their cars , 'hrough the city, for which they receive re-ceive a percentage on the business, arrangements which have proven very satisfactory. After leaving Provo Pro-vo Mr. Barnes will visit the fruit districts dis-tricts of Colorado and then return to his home In Indiana. |
