This will bo the longest tunnol on the American continent, but It will save a lift of 1,000 feot in passing the Sierras and Is therefore practicable in the minds of the officials. As in the great Simplon tube through the Alps, electric engines will be used to haul trains from one portal to tho other, thus eliminating the Bmoke feature, which In a bore of that length would practically annul Its usefulness were ordinary locomotives to be U39d. The tunnel will have a single track, but the double-tracking at cither end will facilitate matters, from the western west-ern portal to Oakland and from the eastern end to Ogden. |
