Show H NO ANSWER FROM PENROSE. p Nearly a week has elapsed since the Pittsburg Leader asked W the following questions, in a message sent direct to Senator Boies H i Penrose Did Senator Boies Penrose receive two payments of B $25,000 rfach from John D. Archbold of the Standard Oil H company, or $50,000 in all. If so, how did he spend the ; other $25,000? If he didn't receive $25,000 twice, whv does fl';' the Archbold letter mention $25,000 sent to Penrose as a H certificate of deposit, while Archbold testified he paid Pen- M rose $25,000 in cash? If the claim may be set up that the H published Archbold letter is a fake, then why did both Pcn- H rose and Archbold hurry to explain the $25,000 directly af- j ter the letter was published? H The Leader directed a communication to Senator Moses E. HL Clapp, chairman of the senate subcommittee on elections and privi- j: lege, and Penrose will be asked to explain the discrepancy immedi- H ately aftcr the committee renews the election contribution inquirv H on Sept. 30. K "Archbold," says the Leader in a telegram to Senator Penrose, "testified that lie gave you $25,000 in currency tho cash. In tho letter written by Archbold to you it is specifically stated that thd $25,000 was sent to you in the form of a. certificate of deposit. Does this mean that you received two payments of $25,000 each from Archbold, Arch-bold, one in cash and the other by check, $50,000 in all? If this interpretation in-terpretation is correct why not confess the extra $25,000? If it is not true, don't you think you ought to make some explanation? Tho people of Pennsylvania want to know and have the right to know. The columns of the Leader are open for your statement." The telegram of the Pittsburg paper has remained unanswered. Later Penrose will be marlo to break his silence. The Ponnsylvania senator confessedly is a briber. IIo handled at least $25,000 of Standard Oil money for the express purpose of obtaining Republican protection for the big oil trust. To this offense he added the more serious one of selling himself to the Standard Oil, the price paid being $25,000. And Boies Penrose is one of the inner circle of the Republican party one of the leaders in the shaping of the policies and legia-. lation of the standpat organization! |
