Show GROCER AND BUTCHER As the result of a pure food inspection inspec-tion visit made to tho various retail stores of this city by Deputy State Food Inspector Heber C. Smith, four complaints are now being made out by County Attorney David Jenson and Cily Food and Dairy Inspector Child, who will assist the state Inspector In the legal prosecution of the alleged offenders. While there wero a number num-ber of minor -violations of the exact letter of tho food laws, many of these did not warrant the Issuing of complaints. com-plaints. Complniuts, however, are being Issued against the Ballard & Belnap meat company on Twenty-fourth Twenty-fourth streot, Albert Coop & Company, P. K. Smith, grocor on Washington avenue, and Paul Bcus, a manufacturer manufac-turer of butter. Tho complaint against Ballard & Belnap will charge the meat men with soiling and having for sale, Hamburger Ham-burger steak containing "freezum." a preserving preparation, chemically Itnown as 6odium sulphate. In the pure food laws enacted in 1907, it is mado a criminal offonsc to sell meat containing sodium sulphate While tho chemical is not known to be absolutely Injurious to the health of tho person eating meat in which a smnll quantity of it is placed, tho law nevertheless forbids its use. BalLird & Belnap -wero arrested for a blmilar ofTensc about two years ago but at that time tho stato lost its caso against the butchers and no fine was imposed. The complaint against Albert Coop & Company is for selling butter without with-out tho proper labels. Butter, according accord-ing to tho law, must bo labelod in such a manner that tho purchaser may know the manufacturer and tho umount of butter in weight. It must also show whethor tho butter is of tho croamery or ranch varlety Grocor Smith Is charged with selling sel-ling butter Improperly labeled and butter which was short In weight. The food men ore said to have purclinsod a pound of butter In the Smith store nnd found later that it contained only 11 and one-half ounces. This butter was purchased by the grocor from Paul Rous, which fact leads to the Issuing of a complaint ngainst Bens. Reus Is to be charged with manufacturing manufac-turing buttor improperly labeled Tho deputy food Inspector left Ogden Og-den for Salt Lake City this morning morn-ing but will return to this city In a few days to assist In prosecuting the cases. oo |
