Show CHARGES MADE ' WASHINGTON, Jan. 12. Charges filed with tho senate committee on Judiciary against the confirmation of Judge William Hunt, now serving as associate judge of the court of customs cus-toms ynppcals. who was appointed by President Taft as an additional circuit cir-cuit judge for tho ninth circuit; for service on the new commerce court, ' ' -J J J": were the subject of an executive hearing hear-ing toduy. Judse Hunt's opponents aro landowners land-owners in the vicinity of Anuconda, Montana, who say that their lands wore ruined 'by tho fumes from the Anaconda smelters. Judge Hunt was on tho district bench in Montana in 1905, when the Innd-owners began proceedings for damages against the smelting corn-pan'. corn-pan'. It is charged that he appointed a special master to take testimony and that the case wns delayed In every way possible to assist the corporation. it is charged, also, that his decisions in tho case contained matter that did not appear In tho testimony, but was brought forward only by the briefs of tho shelters' lawyers. The chief argument was made by C. J. Sawyer, of Anaconda". During the hearing ho was asked why the land-owners never had sought relief In the state courts. Ho replied that the state was In tho grasp of tho smelting trust and that justice was Impossible; Mr. Sawyer was asked to amplify his arguments with a written brief. |
