Show H: DECISION APPIJES TO THE GROCERY TRADE. ' H' ( , Ogden is deeply interested in the Supreme Court decision of H ' Monday in which the principle was enunciated that competition is H essential to a growth in commerce aud that to prevent free play of H competition is to hinder trade expansion. Hr Fora long time, wholesalers and manufacturers have held a 1 threat over the head of retailers that "cut rates" on certain goods H , -would not be allowed and, as a punishment for violation of the rule, H j. any retailer found to be selling those goods at a figure lower than H' the established price, would be placed on a blacklist and forever H barred from making further purchases. H When told that such a course was in defiance of the spirit of H; the interstate commerce act, the manufacturers pointed to certain 1 decisions they had obtained in the lower courts upholding their H ri&ht t0 fix the selling price of their goods and to punish those who failed to conform to their regulations. The Standard has contended H that such decisions were contrary to common sense and good law 1 ad would never receive the sanction of. the supreme court of the i United States, and at la'st our contention has been sustained, for h which we are thankful, because it means much for the consumers H; in Ogden and elsewhere. H; Thelocal grocery stores can now defy the manufacturers or H their agents to do their worst, with the fidl assurance that if any H, attempt is made to hold up prices and. destroy competition, the M strong hand of the government can be invoked with a certainty that H those guilty of thus placing themselves in restraint of trade, will H he severel' punished. H This decision of the supreme court should open wide the doors 1 . of competition in the grocery trade ot Ogden by freeing the retail H grocer from all obligation as to the price at which goods on his 1 shelves arc to bo sold. The grocery man, from now on, is free to do , as he sees fit in marking down the price of his goods and as a H direct result, the riublici should benefit juid Ogden should obtain a Hjil name as one of the best retail markets in all the west. |
