Show NEED OF SANITATION IN TRAINING CAMPS By Mayme Schow That famous old proverb, "An ounce of prevention is ,worth a pound of cure," should be adopted as the slogan of every military training camp in the United States. An army camp must be absolutely sanitary in every respect; it must be built in the most sanitary location and the drainage system must be thorough and effective. During the Civil and Spanish-American wars the death rate in training camps was very high. Malarial fever and small-pox were the most prevalent diseases. These scourges come only as a result of unsanitary locations and surroundings. The high death rate was due to the fact that the authorities then had neither the facilities nor the scientific knowledge necessary to combat com-bat dangerous diseases successfully. With the splendid drainage systems, powerful disinfectants and the quick effective means of treating diseases known to science today we could make our training camps perfectly safe. It is an honor to die bravely fighting for your country, but you could scarce-' ly reward with the title "hero," a soldier sol-dier who dies of some disease while yet in training camp. |
