Show MINERSVILLE HAS A BIG MAY DAY PICNIC The school anil town of Miners-ville Miners-ville joined in a big May Day picnic on last Tuesday. Shortly before ten o'clock the school children left town in a long procession of wagons, fol- lowed by others in buggies, autos. buckboards, and on horseback even a bicycle being pressed into service. The picnickers made camp across the river from Hanging Rock, where by noon half the people of the town had gathered. The morning was spent by the younger ones in rambling ramb-ling up the canyon or climbing the near-by peaks, until the dinner call was sounded. After full justice had been done to the lunch, the crowd assembled as-sembled under the trees for a short program, including musical numbers by the band, songs by the lower grades and a paper of local hits by Alfred Morris. Then, following a heated volley ball game between the school and the town, a "college girl and cowboy race" was held, the girls contesting in rapid addition, while their partners showed their skill in saddling their horses and- carrying the figures back to the judges. The chief excitement of the day came in this race when Earl Thompson's saddle sad-dle turned with him. He. escaped injury in-jury by jumping, but the frightened horse rushed bucking and kicking among the crowded a,utos parked along the course. It 'first plunged into the car of Bishop Marshall, bending the fender and smashing the glass of one light, then it was thrown against Mel Marshall's auto, its hoofs - just grazing Zola Carter, one among (.he little girls who were standing on the running boards of both cars. When the horse was caught and quieted, it was found to have severed sev-ered an artery on the splintered glass. After the excitement had subsided the picnic broke upj and soon the long line of vehicles was rolling merrily down into Miners-ville. Miners-ville. In the evening a dance was held in Wood's Hall, and though the crowd was small, owing to the large number who had gone to the Patriotic Patri-otic Ball at Beaver, it proved to be a pleasant ending for the holiday. |
