Show Preparedness WATCHMEN AT BIG RESERVOIR Irrigation Waters Will be Carefully Guarded Keep Away ARMED MEN PATROL LIGHTED DAM BY NIGHT AND BY DAY Delta Iyand & Water Co. Dear Sirs: In line with the precaution ..now being taken by the United Stales Government to protect public property against destruc- tion by the enemies of the Gov- eriiment, I wisli to call the at- tention of your Company to the necessity of properly safeguard- ing its reservoir dam on Beaver River in Beaver county, also the Diversion dam on Sevier River in Millard county. As you know, attempts have already been made in several parts of the country by sympa- thizers of the central powers to destroy public property and public resources in order to cripple the efficiency of this na- tion in its warfare. Utah must depend upon its water supply in order to per- form its duty in the food eon- servation now being advocated by the Government. Y'ou can very readily see that the do- struction of several of the large dams throughout the State, which store water for irrigation purposes, in addition to jeop- ardiziug life and property, would seriously cripple this State 1n its efforts along this line. I would therefore suggest that your company take the im- mediate steps necessary to prop- erly guard its dam at all times against any attempt at mali- cious destruction. Respectfully, SIMON BAMBERGER, Governor. All irrigation water reservoirs and supplies are to be most carefully guarded. The Government has taken this precautionary step some time since and has taken the matter up through the governors an d forest range officials of all the states where such projects are located. In response re-sponse to the foregoing letter from Governor Bamberger the Delta Land & Water Company and Sheriff Foth-eringham Foth-eringham of Beaver county co-operating have caused to be placed at the Rocky Ford dam lighted torches and two armed guards at night and one guard in the day time. Signs are being painted warning people to stay entirely away from the dam and the reservoir. If your Ford gets thirsty you may stand on the bridge on the public highway and dip water enough to quench the thirst of the car, but you must not loiter or try to fish, go swimming, gather water cress, or make eyes at the wild or tame ducks, pelicans, or other chickens. chick-ens. Just move on, and keep moving. mov-ing. As a matter of fact, the precaution is a most wise move. It would certainly cer-tainly be a dire calamity should the water for irrigation be lost and the food supply of the nation would be greatly reduced the coming season should a few of the big Irrigation reservoirs be spilled of their precious prec-ious contents. The guards will be given full authority au-thority to act in case emergency arises and no one will be allowed about the clam without a pass from A. M. McPherson, general superintendent superin-tendent of the Delta Land & Water Company. The clam is now at about high water mark and the outlook for plenty of water for the coming summer sum-mer seems very good indeed. The rain of last week postponed the necessity ne-cessity of irrigation at least two weeks. tea |
