Show BUSINESS SIDE OF FAKMING Farmers are beginning to learn that there is another side to farming that is quite as important to them as the growing of large crops. Marketing Market-ing and distribution of their products prod-ucts to the best advantage is the one business side that has been much neglected in the past. If there has been any one thing responsible for making the farmer a slave to an underestimated un-derestimated vocation, and which has made it appear an undesirable calling for the ambitious young man, it has been this one phase. There are only a very few people who like to work for the fun there is in it. Most of them are interested to the extent of the profits they get out of their work. In the past when farmers farm-ers have had anything to sell some one has been kind enough to tell them just how much they could have for it, and when they have bought the necessary supplies prices have been dictated to them again. This is where independence has been slavery. The Farm Bureau is aimed to correct cor-rect some of these misunderstandings. misunderstand-ings. All it needs is the support of the farmers. It is their organization. organiza-tion. Through it they all act collectively col-lectively for its individuals. They WILL to do for themselves, make their own rules and agreements, and place their own interpretation on them. In order to improve the business busi-ness side of farming and to standardize standard-ize their production the Farm Bureau Bu-reau has selected a few fundamental projects for development. Two of these are the raising and marketing of hogs and potatoes. Co-operators are required to sign agreements to plant an acreage of a certain variety of potatoes and to raise a number of hogs ready for market at a definite date, the number of acres and hogs to be decided for each co-operator by himself at the time of signing the agreement. He must also agree to market through the Farm Bureau providing it can get as big a net price as can be gotten elsewhere; to conform to its rules of standardization standardiza-tion and to pay his proportion of the necessary expenses in marketing his products. It is hoped by this means that enough produce ot a uniform quality will he raised to enable farmers to export and thus release them of being left to the mercy of the local markets. |
