Show ! Library and B Baths for City St. John's Church Will Fill a Great Need. 1 . New Structure to Provide Pro-vide Good Features. Not a little lias been said of Logan' neerl In the way of a public library and gymnasium. Moving spirits In the progress of the city frequently comment on this need and not a few times In the past have the local papers 1 urged the establishment of these very 1 helpful Institutions. Even In this 1 issue of Tiik RuVuiiLtoAK Is there , 1 editorial mention of Logan's need I along this line, the aim being to call I the attention of the public to the 1 possibility of securing a library and 1 gymnasium by taxation and sollclta- 9 tlon of endowments. 1 Coming This Year. i In the meantime, however, comes a H prospectus of the new St. John's church aod house, to be erected in I 1003, and in this we find an expressed 1 determination 10 meet Logan's need, 1 In a small way at least. According to this prospectus, a brick and stone a church and house Is to be erected at a 1 cost of about $13,000, and It is "planned 1 to meet the social npeds of a college I town, by providing a library, rooms I for reading, games, club meetings, and flr informal gatherings, and also shower ' I baths." It Is truthfully set forth 1 that "there are 1,000 young men In 1 the Logan colleges and yet no place 1 where they may go freely to spend 1 leisure time. The city has no library I or reading room open In the evening, 1 and places of bad Influence are numer- I ous." The Episcopal people sec the 9 need very clearly and propose to meet that need as far they can. 1 Centrally Located. The new structure is to be erected I at the cornor of First North and First k East streets, a central location and quickly accessible to young men who I frequent the city streets. 1 he build-8 build-8 ing Is to be of good Gothlo design, H "adequate for the purpose and worthy I of the city." .As figured at the pres-B pres-B ent time the church proper will cost H about $6,305 and the house, with its H various social rooms, billiard room, I shower baths and heating plant, will it cost about $0,675. I What Jones Says. Rev. Paul Jones, one of the Eplsco-H Eplsco-H pal ministers here, in speaking of the I plan says ample provision to provide I an excellent environment for a largo 1 number of young men is the intention, K and ho emphasized the statement that 1 only the general uplift of the young I men Is the aim. Once the building Is I ready for use, young men are to be fl urged to spend their leisure time there only because It Is better for them to bo there than on the street corners or In the public halls. There will be no conditions imposed upon any frequenters frequent-ers of the social part of tho Institution; Institu-tion; they will bo freo to go and come N as they will, and will never meet with aught of a suggestion religiously. They ( will havcopporlunlty to read standard ' literature and current magazines, of meeting together socially, and of en-Joying en-Joying certain small athletics and shower baths at no cost and In an environment en-vironment elevating rather than debasing. de-basing. Contributions Solicited. A point of Interest in the prospectus is U10 suggestion that contributions of any'sum will be accepted. Only a portion por-tion of the $1:1,000 has been subscribed hence "tho assistance of all who rcc- Continued on Pago 8 i i , Library and Bath Contlnned from page 1. ognlze the value of tho undertaking Is needed; both Logan people who havo at heart the moral welfare of the young college men and realize the value of a public library, and those from other parts of the country to whom this presents an opportunity of assisting la a sound and needy work, since Logan can bear only a portion of the expense." Thk Rei'uulioan would suggest that no worthier cause has been presented pre-sented In recent years. Logan greatly needs just such a place (a more extensive ex-tensive one perhaps, but there is no great hope of getting It soon) so why not lend every reasonable encouragement encourage-ment lo this? There are many In this community who could give from $5 to $1,000 and not miss the coin; so far as the general public good is concerned they could not pace their money better. bet-ter. As the writer views It, the citizens citi-zens of Logan owe to the Episcopal people a great deal of gratitude and a considerable sum of money for securing secur-ing the property purchased and tearing tear-ing down that old adobe eyesore that has graced (?) that corner In recent years. If you arc Interested, confer with cither Rev. Johnston or Jones. |
