Show Scouts to open new camp site PAROWAN The week of July 8 through the 13 will mark a milestone for Brian Head District Scouts and Scouters. A week-long camp has been planned which will mark two important firsts for the district. The camp will be held at the new Braffits Boy Scout Camp, the first such camp ever to be held at this facility. This also will be the first time that all scout troops in the Brian Head District have combined to attend a long term summer camp. The Braffitts camp is a 1300 acre camp area located in Parowan Canyon. This has been recently obtained by the Utah National Parks Council from the Bureau of Land Management to serve as a wilderness type of camp area to serve the needs of boy scouts from throughout the entire council. Brian Head District Scouts feel fortunate in being able to inaugurate camping at this site. Some 50 boys and leaders from Parowan, Paragonah, Summit and Enoch will assemble at the lower camp located adjacent to Highway U-143 about eight miles up Parowan Canyon. The first activity will be a flag raising cermony on Monday morning July 8 at 10 a.m. Camp directors Franklin Jones, Alma Lawrence, and Norman Grimshaw have arranged a great program of activities centered around the pioneering concept which are appropriate to this camping area. One of the highlights will be an overnight backpack camp at the upper camp. There will be social events too, the first of which will be an evening camp-fire camp-fire program Monday July 8 with prominant scouters Morris Shirts and Otto Fife as featured guests. The General public particularly parents of scouts are invited to this event. On Friday night July 12 will be father and son evening with a special award ceremony to be held at 8 p.m. Camp will break on Saturday morning with check out before 12 noon. ' |
