Show New baseball league moves into full swinq Cedar City's newest baseball league for young men 16 through 19, got underway this past week and promises to provide some outstanding baseball base-ball this season. Since the league is not yet named and the teams have no specific sponsors, for the sake of Identification we have chosen to call the team's by their coaches names. Mike's is managed by Mike Webster; Don's by Don Heap and Richard Judd; Bryan's. by Bryan Wood and Fella Johnson and Hack's is managed by Hack Mitchell. After one week of play Don's and Hack's have taken the lead, each with two victories. In the opening round of play Mike's and Bryan's each suffered suf-fered losses. In the opening game it was Hack's over Bryan's by a score of 9 to 6. Cornell Christensen picked up the mound victory for Hack's giving up seven hits over the seven inning stint. Suffering the loss was Hayden who also gave up seven hits. Bryan's picked up four of their six tallies in the first inning in-ning of play on the strength of a home run by Bayles. Hack's came back with a tally in the first, three in the third to knot the score and forced into the lead with three in the fourth. Extra base hits for Hack's include in-clude triples by Rollo, Thompson Thomp-son and Christensen. Don's picked up their first victory over Mike's 8-6. Mike's held a 6-3 lead after five innings in-nings of play but Don's put together to-gether four hits including triples by Piatt and Stephenson in the sixth to push in five runs and chalk up the win. Webb and Adams shared mound duty for the winners. Kevin Cox and Brad Hunter were on the mound for the losers. Cox hit a home run in the second frame to give Mike's an early edge but they couldn't maintain the lead. Don's scored their second victory of the week over Bry-ans Bry-ans with a 5-4 margin. Bryans pushed in four tallies In the first inning, starting off with a triple by Mike Rice but failed to score in the remainder of the game. Don's came in the second frame aided by a triple by Piatt pushed in two in the fourth with a triple by Webb, to knot the score at 4 -all. The game winning run came across in the fifth frame when Meyers singled moved to second on an error and scored on a single by Stephenson. The first week's play ended with Hack's scoring a 8-3 victory vic-tory over Mike's. Steve Jenson went the distance on the mound for the winners while Mike's started with Matias Quintanilla and finished with Cox. Extra base hits for Hack's included doubles by Christensen Christen-sen and Cannon. Of the six hits for Mike's only one was for extra bases a double by Quintanilla. |
