Show Coal Lease Sale Approved The Department of the Interior has approved a competitive coal lease sale for the right to extract 2.6 million tons of federal underground un-derground coal located in Carbon County approximately ap-proximately 25 miles east of Price, Utah. The sale, the tenth to be held nationally under the short term criteria of the June 14,1978 amended court order in Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., et. al. v. Royston Hughes et. al., will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 5, in room 1408 of the University Club Building, 136 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111 by the Bureau of Land Management. According to Paul L. Howard, BLM Utah state director, sealed bids must be submitted on or before 1 p.m., Dec. 5, to the Utah BLM State Office, room 1400 , at the above address. This is the third coal lease sale to be held by BLM in Utah under the amended court order added Howard. Kaiser Steel Corporation applied for a competitive lease on 476 acres to continue con-tinue its on-going Sunnyside mine. The U.S.Geological Survey has recommended that the lease would qualify for the bypass criteria of the amended court order as onewhere federal coal might never be recovered due to economic or environmental reasons if not mined as part of an existing mine operation. Annual production for the 12 months prior to Sept.27, 1977 was 736,700 tons. The applied for reserves meet the five year limit based on annual production. |
