Show Sot f f On Nov. 16, Quit frnoktnC for a day. Someone has come up with an offer to make Iron County smokers richer, prettier, and live longer. And for free! Sound good? It's the American Cancer Society's THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT. Here's now it works. The Cancer Society is asking smokers to pledge not to smoke on just one day, Nov.l6-that's THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT. The all-out effort to concentrate con-centrate on just one day is based on the theory that it is easier to deal with will power a day at a time. No matter how many reasons a smoker has for quitting, the thought of a future without another cigarette is frightening. Now, about that free offer. Right off the bat non-smokers non-smokers are richer by the $150 to$200 a year that they don't spend on a pack of cigarettes every day. They'll be wage earners longer, pay for fewer health care expenses, ex-penses, and get some big insurance benefits. Non-smokers Non-smokers have fewer accidents, ac-cidents, so several insurance companies offer lower insurance in-surance rates. And many life insurance policies offer cash in the form of lower premiums as a bet that non-smokers non-smokers live longer. ' wnat about looking pretty? Aside from the fact that stained fingers and teeth aren't attractive, many scientists are convinced con-vinced that smoking reduces the oxygen in skin which causes premature aging and wrinkles. Sound good? Then celebrate THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT by pledging a day without cigarettes, Nov. 16. The pledge is important, says the Cancer Society, because it makes a helpful psychological commitment. |
