Show i Utah Symphony opens Cedar Music Arts season Cedar City music lovers will be highly pleased with the honored visit of Maestro Abravanel, Musical i Director and Conductor of the Utah i Symphony as he conducts the or- ! chestra on November 15, at 8:15 p.m. at the Cedar City High School. This is f Mr. Abravanel's first visit to Cedar i City in several years making this a I highlight to begin the Music Arts i Season for 1978-79. Johannes Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture" will begin the program. Brahms composed the piece in 1880 and it was first performed per-formed under Brahms' direction before the faculty of the University of Breslau which had awarded him an honorary PhD in 18in 1879. According to Dr. Lowell Durham of the Universtiy of Utah "the overture alternates between serious and jovial moods, as for that matter so does the university student's life." Nov. 7 60 30 .00 sympnony, tne music is actually a suite, "a series of musical tableau that are illustrative of the program suggested by the title of each movement," states Dr. Durham. Born in 1830 in Hungary, his precocious progress with elementary music and violin lessons prompted his attendance at the Conservatory in Vienna when he was fourteen. The program will finish with Sir Edward Edgar's "Variations on an Original Theme, 'Enigma' ". Elgar ranks as one of Britains foremost composers and became successful in the early 1900's when Richard Strauss gave his "blessing" to one of his cantatas. Dr. Durham explains the "Enigma", "The score, which includes in-cludes a theme and (now) fourteen variations is dedicated to the composer's com-poser's 'friends pictured within'. Elgar explains that each variation is a musical personification of members of his inner circle of associates. This season marks Abravanel's 31st year with the Utah Symphony. His is the longest tenure of any conductor con-ductor with a major United States orchestra, except for Eugene Or-mandy Or-mandy in Philadelphia.
