Show Highway trooper killed; suspect held A Utah Highway Patrolman was dead and an 18 year old youth was in custody at the Beaver County Hospital in Beaver late Tuesday evening. Dead was Trooper Lynn Pearson stationed out of Panguitch who was discovered by a passing motorist west on Utah Highway 20. The death was reported to the Utah Highway Patrol and roadblocks were set up vertually throughout the state. A 1978 Ford Pickup -- later identified as a stolen vehicle from Montana --apparently --apparently changed its course when approaching a roadblock on 1-15 South of the U-20 Interchange and north of Paragonah. A high speed chase at speeds over 100 miles per hour ensued toward Beaver where the vehilce ran through a roadblock south of Beaver, took the Beaver exit and crashed into a field on the south end of Beaver. The occupant was identified as 18 year old Brian Stack of Illinois. During the chase officers fired at the vehicle and blew a front tire of the pickup. W'hen the youth was ap-prenhended ap-prenhended he had suffered superficial super-ficial wounds about the head and was taken to the Beaver County Haspital for treatment. Late Tuesday evening the suspect was under heavy guard at the hospital with the investigation still pending. No charges had been filed. It is presumed that the investigation in-vestigation will be turned over to Garfield County officers where the Highway Patrolman was shot. When taken into custody Stack had in his possession two pistols and a rifle, believed to be thrown from the pickup, had been located west of where the shooting took place. The shooting was reported through the Highway Dispatch system at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday morning.
