For the record, and as a parent of four children who will enter into the Iron County School District in the near future, I am concerned about the possible quality of education, that not only my children will receive, but also that of all children in the community, therefore questions need to be answered an-swered about the current controversy concerning the demotion of Dr. Hawley. As a taxpayer of exorbitant faxes, . especially property taxes, that are used for public education, I do not object to paying for quality education for our children, but I do object to using the bulk of these taxes for bureaucratic bickering and politics,' which seems to be the purpose in the present controversy. Therefore, as a matter of public record, I protest the way that the Iron County School District seems to be covering up its own sins. Wrri. R. Gillespie Editor: I am writing to you as a concerned taxpayer and resident in Iron County about our ambulance service. My family and I were moved by the state to Cedar City last October and we had hoped after living in Park City and Salt Lake, that moving again to a small Utah town would afford us the opportunity to become involved with our community. But we found this not to be the case. As a certified Utah Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and instructor, I joined the ambulance service but was suddenly left off the shift schedule after two months and told that I could not rejoin while Steve Gadegaard was on the service. And now after six months, I find that I have been accused of incompetence in-competence and harassment by the head of the nursing and ambulance service. This grieves me personally. IN my eight months in Cedar City I have met a large number of nurses and EMT's who are former employees em-ployees or volunteers at the Valley View Medical Center and have few kind words to say about it. A high turnover of qualified employees in any organization is an indication of poor management and a waste of human resources. Because of the current high turnover tur-nover in EMT's on the Iron County Ambulance Service, their supervisor is proposing that yet another EMT course be held. I strongly oppose this if county hospital funds are going to be used. There are already certified EMT's, excluding myself, in Cedar City who are taxpaying residents and could function on ambulance service if invited. It is a waste of county funds to train college students who will only be leaving in the summer or at the end of their schooling, when taxpaying residents are available. But Iron County residents will get what they allow for an ambulance service. If EMT's are going to be treated like Kleenex, disposable, then you have to train new ones. I tried to change this situation but I find that I have been worn down and will now just fade away. I had hoped to do some community service in Cedar City in the years that I will be here, but I will no longer try. Sincerely, Michael Coffeen |
