Show Building Needs Outlined by Superintendent and at the present time that constructing con-structing two additional elementary schols and one or perhaps two secondary schools prior to 1990 does not seem financially feasible. He said that it will be possible to construct an elementary school by 1983 but not possible to finance other elementary or secondary schools between 1983 and 1990. He outlined other areas of possible financial assistance which might include assistance from the state for capital outlay purposes, double sessions, and year round schools. "A realistic solution may be a ' combination of maximum local effort. state aid, double school sessions and year round schools. It is superfluous to say that the problems and solutions will generate an interesting era in the decade to come," stated Morris. "As yet, decisions have not been made by the Board of Education on the above sites or buildings, other than the Cross Hollow site which was a gift. This article is only intended to get the citizens acquainted vith what appears to be the problems as observed by the superintendent in 1979. Growth patterns shift from, year to year which will require adjustments ad-justments in planning from time to time," concluded the superintendent. A new elementary school, the size of the new Enoch Elementary School, will be needed at least every four ycftrs, according to a statement released on Monday by Dr. J. Clair Morris, Superintendent of the Iron County School District. According to projected figures, enrollment in the elementary schools in the school district will increase at an average rate of 110 students per year over the next five years. Since the rate of increase seems to be accelerating ac-celerating each year, the 110 students per year increase is probably a conservative figure, stated Morris. "The Enoch Elementary School will open in 1979; therefore, another new school will need to be ready for occupancy oc-cupancy by 1983, construction must begin in 1981," continued Morris. "By 1987, four years later, another elementary school will be needed, etc. As soon as financially possible, a seven-room addition needs to be added to the new Enoch Elementary School," projected the superintendent. superin-tendent. The. anticipated increases at the elementary schools will also affect enrollments at the junior high and high school levels as early as 1986. The first of the larger elementary school age groups is expected to move into the junior high school in fall 1979 with the junior high being filled to ' capacity by 1986. The high school will probably be filled to capacity soon after 1986 according to Morris's statement. Morris suggests that the Iron County School District buy an elementary school site north of Cedar City in the Fiddler's Canyon area. He said that the school district currently . owns an elementary school site southwest south-west of Cedar Products Company. Morris stated that since most school sites should be purchased 10 to 20 years in advance that it would be good management to purchase two sites for secondary schools in the near future. Morris said that under present laws |
