Show Public Hearing on 1977 Budget A public hearing on the proposed budget for Cedar City Corporation for Fiscal 1977 will be held this evening, Thursday, at 7 p.m. a the Courtroom of the City and County Building, according to Mayor L. Kerry Jones. The council is proposing a budget of $2,148,600, of which $430,000 has been allocated to complete the Sewage Treatment facilities currently under construction. No other major capital outlay is anticipated an-ticipated for the next fiscal year, according ac-cording to Mayor Jones, allowing for a budget of $1,718,000 to "simply" meet the ongoing needs of the City in providing services to residents. Mayor Jones indicates in-dicates that the Council, in order to balance the budget for the coming year, has found it necessary to reduce departmental depart-mental requests by approximately $250,000. One of the problems of preparing a budget this year is that the revaluation of property throughout Iron County has changed the tax base. However, the new assessed valuation of the taxable property for Cedar City purposes is not know at this time - yet restrictions are placed on the amount of revenue sought from this source of revenue. By law the city can collect only 106 percent of that collected last year. The actual mill levy necessary to reach that figure cannot be computed until the assessed valuation has been determined, it is pointed out. The proposed budget, according to Mayor Jones, is within the limits prescribed by law in total dollars to be expended, but the actual mill levy cannot be set until a later date. Residents are invited to attend the hearing. It is expected that the budget with any modifications, will be adopted following the hearing, in order to initiate the new fiscal year by July 1, Mayor Jones concluded. V |
