Show Rewrite desk Committee accepts Garn proposal He emphasized that he "fully supports" the selection of Anthony to appear on the coin "as long as the dollar bill is not phased out. But, I think the father of our country should be recognized on our country's basic unit of currency, be it the dollar coin or the dollar bill." The Senate Banking Committee Tuesday adopted an amendment offered by U.S. Senator Jake Garn requiring that the proposed new dollar coin bear the traditional scene of an eagle landing on the moon. Reacting to a depiction of a soaring eagle that had been proposed by the Treasury Department, Garn said: "It looks like a chicken!" The committee agreed with Garn's assertion that the lunar scene -- which appears on the Eisenhower silver dollar - "reflects an historic occasion for Americans and all mankind and should be preserved. "The accomplishment of landing the first man on the moon was a tribute to the American system and scientific community," he added. After accepting Garn's amendment, amend-ment, the committee unanimously reported out a bill which would autnorize a smaller dollar coin bearing the likeness of Susan B. Anthony, famed women's rights leader. " "I still have strong reservations about the unbusinesslike approach we are using with this coin," noted Garn, who had proposed thatr national serveys be conducted to assess the public opinions about the issue. |
