Show Festival musicians to give concert A concert-demonstration of Rennaissanco music by the Utah Shakespearian Festival Consort will bo presented Sunday, Sun-day, Aug. 2 at 8:15 p.m. in the orchestra room of the Southern Utah State College Music Center. Director is Fred Gable, Festival music director. The free concert Is designed1 to introduce audiences to the I varied and distinctive instrumental instru-mental and vocal sounds of Kith century music, Dr. Gable said. Programmed will be some music currently used in the Festival plays, but much Other Oth-er music will be performed, instruments, lie added that early music performers usually usual-ly play several instruments rather than specializing in on-ly on-ly one instrument. This provides pro-vides the needed flexibility in instrumentation and makes possible the performance of a wide variety of music with tho same musicians. ' Dr. Gable is completing his first season with the Festival. He is in charge of musical direction di-rection for the pre-play entertainment enter-tainment as well as for the actual plays, lie is currently an assistant professor of Music at the University of California j at Riverside where he is direc-I direc-I tor of the Collegium Musicum, which specializes in the performance per-formance of Kilh and 17th century cen-tury music. He received his UA degree from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., and MA and I'll 1 degrees in musicology from tile University of Iowa. Ho has taughl at the University Univers-ity of Wisconsin and at Arizona Ari-zona State University. Dr. Gable's specially trained train-ed musicians are Stephen F. Kispersky, Claremont, Calif.; Margaret Jane Hilton Young, Yucaipa, Calif.; William 'Winters, 'Win-ters, Maspcth, N.Y., and Pamela Pam-ela Crane, Madison, Wis. according to Dr. Gable. Selections Se-lections will include songs with lute accompaniment, a j lute solo, viola da gamba trio ' and duet, French and Italian 'songs for voice and instruments, instru-ments, solo for a gamba and harpsichord, and J. Dowland's "Lachrimae" (" If music be the food of love" music from "Twelfth Night") in the setting set-ting for mixed consort. Dr. Gable said the concert will provide an opportunity for a closer look at the ancient instruments used for this type of music and for asking questions ques-tions regarding the music and |
