Southern Utah State Thunder-bird Thunder-bird basketball team are in-eluded in-eluded in the statistical report re-port of District Seven of the National Association of Intercollegiate Inter-collegiate Athletics. Al Winfield leads the T-Birds T-Birds in the statistics department. depart-ment. Currently he is the second sec-ond leading scorer in the district with a 23.8 per game average, headed only by Ed Kemp of Adams State. In addition ad-dition Winfield, pulling down 12.3 rebounds per game is fourth in the district. Walt Smith of Adams State is the leading rebounder with a 114 average. Two others are just one-tenth of a rebound per game ahead of Winfield. In fieldgoal percentage Winfield Win-field Is also included in the top ten. hitting at a clip. That particularly statistic is led by Mike Booth of Western New Mexico at .591. Winfield is seventh. Two other members of the T-Birds are included in the free thrown percentage with Roger Gorniehee hitting 27 of 33 for a .SIS percent and Sam Sampson with 28 of 35 for an even -S30. Craig Mortensen of Adams State leads in this department de-partment with an .814 average. aver-age. Statistically in team competition com-petition the T-Birds are the seoend leading team score' wiht an average of 89.5 per game behind Ne.v Mexcc Highland scoring at a 90.3 per game clip. Ironically the T-Eirds T-Eirds are next to the bottom in team defense, allowing an 8S.6 points per game and only New Mexico Highland has allowed more. Eastern New Mexico University is the stingest team in the district, giving up only 70.7 points per game to their opponents. Coach Boyd Adams' crew leads in the District in team free throw percentage with an average of .715 and is the third yeading team in field-I field-I goal percentages with .452. |
