Show Schools offer learning experiences has taught the past several summers at the Sixth Army Intelligence School at Fort MacArthur, California. Mr. Anderson graduated from Brijj'ham Young University. Univer-sity. While attending BYU, he .vas imolvej in an experimental experi-mental educational program call I-STEP. It was a continuous continu-ous progress approach to education ed-ucation on the college level. Ho is currently working towards to-wards his master's degree in education philosophy at BYU. "Individual" would probably pro-bably be the one overriding word heard in a conversation with members of the Cedar City Hih School (CCHSt Social So-cial Science Department. Their stated philosophy is to "provide a meaningful learning learn-ing experience for all students stu-dents ba-ted on the student's individual interests and abilt-iy". abilt-iy". With this philosophy in mind, the department person-sonnel person-sonnel have developed can-t.nuous can-t.nuous prcgres.; packet sv for all of the classes which are many, i. e. geo politics, U. S. Government, economics, sociology, so-ciology, psychology, American problems and American history. his-tory. With the exception of American Am-erican problems, all classes resource center into a full, available social science media me-dia center. Future plans call for the offering of a semester class in minority studies with emphasis em-phasis on local Indian groups. In the area of American History, His-tory, the teachers are moving in the direction of critical thinking. The teachers will pot become the sc dispenser; cf information; as mentioned, they will be one source resource re-source people. Work will be concentrated more on small group efforts than on large Class efforts (this is done in AP English at the current time). It is hoped that this will enable students to speak more freely. Groups of eight to ten are envisioned; currently cur-rently the groups are from fifty to sixty students. The two men Who staff tha department are well-trained well-trained in their various areas. Kent Bishop serves as department depart-ment chairman. Kent is a graduate of Utah State University Uni-versity (USU). He has also attended at-tended v College of Southern Utah, now Southern Utah State College (SUSC). He served serv-ed in the army for three years. He is ipresently working towards h'is master's degree at USU and furthering his knowledge know-ledge with classes from SUSC. He has attended advanced placement workshops; has worked with the Rocky Mountain Moun-tain Educational Laboratory and has served as a consultant consult-ant for a workshop in continuous contin-uous progress at Cherry Creek School District in Denver, Colorado, Col-orado, He is a member of the Utah National Guard and are taught on the semester basis. Within the American history classes, there are three different phases of learning difficulty. In addition to the Classes mentioned, the department, de-partment, in order to meet the needs of all students, features fea-tures two advanced placement classes: European history, taught by Kent Bishop; this class is in its second year; and United States history, taught by Richard Anderson. This class has been taught for five years. Social Science does not really real-ly prepare one for any given profession, but instead it deals with the role -of an individual in-dividual in his given society; it enables him to better adjust ad-just to its varied institutions. The department lhas attempted attempt-ed to provide the classes which should better enable en-able ALL students to make this adaptation. To enable thorn to do their work, the department de-partment has a fully developed develop-ed resource center and they have part-time paraprofes-sional paraprofes-sional help in staffing it. In the center students can do research, see films and film-strips, film-strips, listen to records, and use the instructors as resource people. So that a person may work at his own rate and depth level, the continuous progress packets mentioned earlier in the article are available. Mr. Bishop and Mr. Anderson hope to develop this |
