Show I Request Is Made For Studies On Dixie Project Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, R-Utah, R-Utah, has asked Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall "to investigate as thoroughly as possible all technical and engineering plans for construction con-struction of a new Dixie Project Pro-ject damsite so that we can be certain there will be no recurrence re-currence of the difficulties facing the project today." Sen. Bennett, in a letter to Secretary Udall stated, "Changes "Chan-ges of the main Dixie Project damsite and the accompanying accompany-ing problems have cast a shadow sha-dow around the economic feasibility fea-sibility of the Project, forcing Utahns to look elsewhere for financial assistants." He added, "I will support any and all legislation which will provide sufficient funding fund-ing for the research projects under way, and I will support any proposals calling for adequate ade-quate staffing for the present Bureau of Recamation Dixie Project office in St. George so the proper studies can be made." The Utah Republican indicated indi-cated he also would support "any feasible and equitable program that comes before us so that we can get the Dixie Project off the ground. I would hope that the Interior Department Depart-ment and the Bureau of Reclamation Rec-lamation would do likewise." Sen. Bennett wrote Secretary Secre-tary Udall, "It is obvious that the Central Arizona Project i legislation, which includes the Dixie Project, is not going to be considered by the House of Representatives this year, although al-though it was recently approved ap-proved by the Senate." He added, "In iact, there is some doubt that the House Interior In-terior Committee will go along with a Senate version of the legislation at all." The Utah Senior Senator stated, sta-ted, "I understand several alternatives al-ternatives are being considered consid-ered for the Dixie Project sit- uation. One which may give us the repayment answer, calls for obtaining revenues from Hoover and Parker-Davis Dams. However, this obviously will require special legislation legisla-tion which some of us now are considering." |
