Show QUARTERBACK MISSING Thunderbirds Open Practice in j Preparation for 1967 Grid Season I Tuesday was press day for j the College of Southern Utah I Football team, but for new i head mentor Thomas Kings-ford Kings-ford it might better be described describ-ed as "depressed" day. Coach Kingsford on the opening op-ening day of the football sea-; sea-; son, got the word that one of I his two contenders for the important im-portant quarterback spot, j-avid sevens, would noi oe out this season. Nevens listed personal reasons for his decision deci-sion not to enter school tms fall. Pressure on Kimoto The loss of Nevens left Coach Kingsford with a top quarterback in veteran Re,d Kimoto, but Nevens was ex- i pected to help provide the depth that will be necessary in the tough nine game schedule sche-dule this season. All is not black for Coach Kingsford. He has many veterans vet-erans in some of the top performers per-formers in CSU's football history, his-tory, including such names as Pat Rippe, Paul Hortin, Doug Wolters, Jerry Spackman, Wade Bender, Bill Lamb to mention just a few. Still Coach Kingsford is in a dilemma. Not having the op-I op-I portunity to work in spring ! football, he is faced with a season opener against Colorado Colora-do Western at Gunnison, Colo, on Sept. 16 with a crew he knows little about. Three-a-day Drills Wednesday, began the drive to eliminate the unknown for Coach Kingsford as he began three-a-day drills in preparation prepara-tion for that opening clash. The entire squad will work out mornings and evenings with afternoon drills set aside for specialty work. Following Tuesday's press meeting Coach Kingsford and his staff held a squad meeting meet-ing and held the first training train-ing meal in preparation for Wednesday's opening drills. |
