J In reaching the championship Moapa defeated Mocassin in the opening round of play, 76 to 50, ' then tangled with Richfield in the semi-finals in one of the Moapa walked off with top honors here Saturday night in the Eighth Annual Southern Regional Re-gional Indian Mission basketball tournament staged at the College of Southern Utah fieldhouse. The Moapa crew won the eight team championship with a 59 to 41 victory over Kanosh. In the consolation championship champion-ship game Las Vegas routed Enterprise En-terprise 56 to 27 for fourth place outstanding games of the tourna- j ment. Moapa defeated Richfield 57 to 55 in a closely contested battle from beginning to end. Moapa i held a 34 to 31 lead at the end of the first half of play. Nolan Benn I led the Moapa attack with 24 points while Tsosie Tsoijinin added add-ed 17 points in a losing cause for J Richfield. honors and third place went to Richfield with a one-sided victory vic-tory over Cedar City, 89 to 37. At the conclusion of the two-day two-day event a number of trophies were presented by Dean Larsen, ! executive secretary of the Indian Committee of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The sportsmanship trophy was awarded to the Fredonia, Ariz., entry in the tournament and the coveted Achievement trophy was presented to Mocassin, Ariz. The Achievement trophy is based on participation of members of the team at their various church meetings. The Moccasin team had an average attendance of 65 percent for all of its members in their church meetings. In second place was Cedar City with 58 percent and Richfield was in third with 48 percent. The Achievement trophy is a revolving trophy and will move each year until one team has won the trophy three times, at which time, it will become the permanent possession of that team. An all-star team was also selected sel-ected and individual trophies awarded. Named to the all-star team were Cutris Anderson, Las Vegas, Veg-as, and formerly of Cedar City; Nolan Benn, Moapa; Elmer Mayo, Kanosh; Tsosie Tsoijinin, Richfield, Rich-field, and Delton Tom, Moapa. |
