Show Coordinating Council Discusses Youth Problems at Meeting The Cedar City Coordinating Council met in general session Tuesday for the purpose of discussing dis-cussing problems relating to the youth of Cedar City. The leaders lead-ers of youth of the community were given a sperfial invitation to attend as well as representatives representa-tives of each organized group in Cedar City. Chairman Kerry Jones presided. The meeting was under the direction of the Cedar City Youth Council and its chairman Dub Leigh. Judge Sterling Bos-sard Bos-sard of the juvenile court, and Tony Lambert, security officers of the College of Southern Utah were guest speaakers. Judge Bossard and Mrs. Lambert Lam-bert indicated that they thought drinking among juveniles is our No. 1 problem. It was brought out that 75 of the youngsters apprehended for other offenses were under the influence of alcohol. alco-hol. Parents were admonished to help with this problem . Merchants Mer-chants were reminded that young people under age are purchasing beer in our markets. Merchants were asked to verify the fact that a customer is of age before selling sell-ing intoxicants to them. If they do sell to minors, both the owner of the store and the clerk involved in-volved are liable and if apprehended appre-hended they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, according ac-cording to Judge Bossard. Other juvenile offenses were discussed. Citizens were asked tn rarefullv evaluate a check be- fore cashing it Much of the trouble will be eliminated if the merchants would do this. The problem of stealing and of smoking smok-ing were discussed. Both prob-lebs prob-lebs are serious in our community. commu-nity. According to Chairman Leigh, all of our citizens are responsible respon-sible for our young people. We must try harder to reach them. |
