Show Cedar City WU1 Adopt Half Cent Sales Tax A one-half cent city sales tax will become effective in Cedar City and Iron County on July 1st, as the result of ordinances approved ap-proved by the Iron County Commission Com-mission and the Cedar City Council Coun-cil at meetings during the past week. Under the new law, approved ap-proved at the last session of the State Legislature, it is possible pos-sible for cities and towns to assess as-sess the one-half cent sales tax, providing the county first adopts an ordinance making it effective. Under the regulations the county will collect the sales tax in areas outside the limits of cities or incorporated towns, and also In any city or town that does not adopt the tax. The Cedar City Council adopted adopt-ed the tax and requested .the County Commissioners to take action to make this possible. The other incorporated areas, Paro-wan, Paro-wan, Paragonah and Kanarra-villo, Kanarra-villo, have not taken this action. The county will collect the tax in those towns, unless city ordin-arces ordin-arces are adopted. The tax collected col-lected in Cedar City will, of course, go into the city treasury. The County may repeal the ordinance or-dinance after it has been in force for one quarter, three months, but this repeal would not repeal the Cedar City ordinance but would result in a discontinuance of the collection of the tax outside out-side Cedar City. Cedar City administrators have completed an agreement with the State Tax Commission, so that collection of the tax may begin on July 1st. Mayor Anderson announces that the city l.vy for this year will be reduced about 3 mills as a result of the sales tax. The following year the levy should be reduced six or seven because the sales tax will be collected throughout the year. |
