Show SAFETY OFFICIALS VISIT CITY WITH ANNUAL APPEAL Residents of southern Utah were asked to help in the sixth annual campaign conducted on a national basis of "Slow Down and Live." The request for the participation was made by G. Ernest Bourne, "Slow Down and Live" coordinator for Utah. Mr. Bourne and Robert D. Hoop. er, district representative of the National Safety Council of Den- ver, Colo., were In Cedar City I Friday, Jan. 31, for the purpose of compiling the annual Inventory Inven-tory of safety activities In Cedar Ce-dar City. Chief of Police Tony Lambert invited the press and members of various civic organizations tc a meeting Friday to hear the remarks of those two safety experts ex-perts regarding the "Slow Down and Live" campaign. Although the program ha been undertaken for six ycarw the 1958 campaign In Utah will be the four'h year that the State of Utah has participated. The program pro-gram has been endorsed by the Governor's Conference and by all major safety organizations of the nation including the National Nation-al Safety Council. "Slow Down and Live" campaign cam-paign Is promoted from Memorial Memor-ial Day through Lahor Day of each year. It Is confined to this period of time which Is the peak travel period throughout the na. tlon, and It Is also the time when motoris's have the biggest tendency ten-dency to "open it up," Bourne stated. The effectiveness of the campaign cam-paign in past years has been outstanding. out-standing. On a national basis it is estimated that 2G9 lives were saved in 1957. On a state basis it can be mea- surod on -an accident ratio basis. ba-sis. Bourne s'ated. In 1957 accidents acci-dents in the state increased three per cent during the year. Success of the campaign depends de-pends entirely on the cooperation coopera-tion and activities of individuals and of groups such as safety organizations, or-ganizations, civic groups and hurch organizations, he stated. It Is the hope of safety people peo-ple that civic groups in the area will take advantage of the many materials available to help spread the campaign's slogr.n of "Slow Down and Live." Following the session of the "Slow Down and Live" campaign cam-paign the two safety officials met with Chlef,Lambert and other oth-er members of the various safety organizations in Cedar City to -omplle an inventory of safety activities for the past year. In 195G Cedar City reported 'he high amount of safety activities ac-tivities of nine communities in the state who annually participate partici-pate in the inventory. "No one can rest on his laurels, laur-els, however," Bourne stated.
