Show Access Road Allocation Reported by Bennett Chances for the rapid develop-1 ment of the access road fromj Kanab to the Glen Canyon Dam! site were much Improved this week as the result of efforts of Senator Wallace F. Bennett. Sen. Bennett received a com-1 mitment from the Bureau of Pub-1 lie Roads to allocate $450,000 to the Glen Canyon access road, j The money will be made avail-1 able as soon as an application to put the road on the primary system is approved and this approval ap-proval is expected some time this week. Under this commitment commit-ment the Glen Canyon road will get nearly one-fourth of $2,000.-000 $2,000.-000 available for access roads for the entire United States. In addition to this good news it was announced that bids would be opened this week by the Bureau of Reclamation for construction of five miles of road southeast of Navajo Bridge in Arizona. Other Important .phases of the Glen Canyon Dam project are ex. peeled to get under way In the-near the-near future, Including the construct con-struct ion of diversion tunnels at the dam site and building of a bridge linking both side of the river. When these projects get under way and the movement of materials begin and the labor force moves into the area, bene flcial effects of the tremendous project will begin to be felt in the entire area of southwestern I Utah and northern Arizona. I Surveyors are already busy preparing plans for the new three-million dollar bridge over it Is expected that bids on the I structure can be opened by Jan ; 1. When completed the bridge will be 1.028 feet long. 56 feet wide, and carry four lanes of traffic. It will span the river gorge 800 feet below the dam site. |
