Show A Fundamental Fact Much criticism has been directed against Salt Lake daily newspapers by Cedar City people in recent weeks because of the failure of the papers to report the activities of the Cedar City Little League All-Star team. Whether or not this criticism is justified the situation should bring local people to the realization that the only newspaper in the world that cares what happens tp Cedar City or its people is the Iron County Record. This is not an unusual situation at all. It is merely a fundamental fact that the home town newspaper has the interest of its community at heart, is concerned about its development, its progress and the conditions that prevail within its confines. Large daily papers are interested in news from all areas and willingly publish that news when it is submitted to them. However, it is published because they are concerned with readership, which increases circulation, cir-culation, and in turn increases advertising revenue. They do not publish the news because they are interested in the welfare of any community, other perhaps, than to the extent community development helps the state as a whole. A state paper seldom, if ever, campaigns for a project of community development no matter how important that development may be to the community. The Daily will publish stories of it, of course, but are really in no position to campaign actively for a project, and cannot be expected to do so. In view of this situation it would be well for local leaders, civic, school and governmental, to remember that it takes local support to put over local projects. The papers published in the metropolitan centers cannot be too concerned con-cerned about whether the people support a bond, approve a tax increase, or dozens of other activities of a strictly local nature. Nor does the Daily care whether a city or county official is re-elected, whether It be mayor, councilman, council-man, commissioner, attorney or sheriff department official; offi-cial; or care whether a particular police head, school official, of-ficial, coach or teacher, or any other Is re-appointed, promoted pro-moted or discharged. It is nice to have your name appear in the state papers, pa-pers, but after all is it really important? Because there is no question about it no newspaper In the world cares what hapens to you or your community except your home town paper. 1 |
