Show TO DIRECT SUMMER SCHOOL Education Dept. Chairman Named The chairman of the department depart-ment of education and summer school at College of Southern Utah was announced by Dr. Roy. den C. Braithwaite, director, following fol-lowing the regular meeting of the board of trustees in Logan. Dr. Joseph N. Fillerup, who this year completed requirements for the doctor of education degree de-gree at Columbia University, New York, will fill the position In the four-year elementary education ed-ucation program at C S U. Dr. Braithwaite also announced that Dr. Fillerup will be chairman of summer school here since the six-week session centers around the department's program. The major function of the education department Is the preparation of teachers In the elementary grades. A four-year course Is offered of-fered at C S U. A native of Lovell, Wyo., Dr. Flllesup received his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University Uni-versity of Wyoming. During the past year he studied at Teachers Teach-ers College, Columbia University and was awarded the doctor of education degree while completing complet-ing his study in New York. Dr. Fillerup was research assistant DR. JOSEPH N. FILLERUP for the Metropolitan School Study Stu-dy Council. He was also chosen to be coordinator and expeditor of research. For two years after receiving his master's degTee he taught at the Anchorage High School, Alaska. In making the announcement. Director Braithwaite said, "We feel very fortunate in securing the services of Dr. Fillerup in heading head-ing up our program in the training train-ing of elementary teachers. He comes to us highly recommended by every person with whom he has worked as a teacher, administrator admin-istrator and guaduate student. He is well trained as an engineer engi-neer as well as an educator. His work at Columbia University gave him excellent training in the coordination of research involving in-volving the Metropolitan School Study. His doctor's research was concerned with the relationship of community groups to the quality of education being carried car-ried on In the schools." Dr. and Mrs. Fillerup are now living In Cedar City. They have deep enthusiasm for the work ahead at C S U and for the establishment of thplr . Ihome here," Director Braithwaite said. |
