Show Broncos Capture Single Win In Tourney Play College of Southern Utah bas- ketball team returned this past; week end from its annual trip to southern California and participating par-ticipating in the Chaffey Invitational Invita-tional tournament with a single win and three losses against Jsome of the top junior college competition in the nation. Opening in California against San Bernardino, prior to the tour-nament, tour-nament, the Broncos were downed down-ed by a score of 73 to 53. In the opening round of the Chaffey tournament the Broncos were defeated by Fullerton, defending de-fending champions of the tournament, tour-nament, who went on to repeat as tournament champions, by a score of 87 to 63. In the second round of play the Broncos came up with their best effort and posted an 80 to 78 win over Santa Monica Junior College, then lost in the semifinals semi-finals of the consolation .round against Glendale 81 to 67 In another an-other close game that was not broken open by the California club until near the end of the game. George Rekoutls was the top scorer for the Broncos in the four game series. He posted 10 against San Bernardino, was out of action against Fullerton with I a pulled muscle, came back to score 23 against Santa Monica in th-. winning efofrt and tallied 17 against Glendale in the final game of the trip. Eric Gardner was close behind with 10 against San Bernardino, 14 against Fullerton, 9 against Santa Monica and 15 against Glendale. Bob Gardner scored 22 points in the contest against Santa San-ta Monica and was one of the top rebounders for the Broncos on the trip. The Broncos are a small club this year and it was expected that the lack of height would be one of the weak features of this club this season. Coach Petty indicated, in-dicated, however, that the boys rebounded exceptionally on the California trip with B. Gardner, Dave Voegle and Ron Van Wag-genen, Wag-genen, turning In top performances perform-ances in this department. Two big boys were respon-jsible respon-jsible for the Bronco defeat with Clark and Gwen, both negroes, tanking 22 and 18 points respectively respect-ively and Franko adding 18 for the winners. In this contest Voegle Voe-gle came through with 12 points, and Severance eight to go with E. Gardner's tops for the Broncos of 14, Against Santa Monica, the only on-ly win for the Broncos, the phe-nomlnal phe-nomlnal foul shooting of the Broncos spelled the difference in the close game which ended 80 to 78. CSU hit 20 for 20 from the foul line and Rekoutls, high man with 28, had 11 field goals and six for six from the charity stripe. Against Glendale the Broncos stayed with the Californions for 'moft of the game. CSU led at jhalltlme by a 30 to 28 margin and it was late In the final half before Glendale broke away on some fine outside shooting to go on to an 81 to 67 win. |
