Show I Canyon Road Funds to Breaks Allocated I Funds for the completion of the final stretch of the Parowan Canyon Road, reaching from the end of the present construction project to the Cedar Breaks National Na-tional Monument boundary, were allocated at a meeting of the Utah State Highway Commission last Friday in Salt Lake City. This information was given out by Commissioner Earl Bunn, who received the word from William T. Smirl, Kanab, member of the commission, at the meeting of the Five County Organization in Pangultch on Saturday. The final stretch of road, 3.0 miles, begins where the present construction project ends at the entrance Into Jlnney Beck 'flat and will end at the monument boundary on the head of tne Mammoth. Commissioner Bunn states that $220,000 has been allocated al-located to this project which is a part of the Secondary road system of the state, and will be Included In the 1961 construction program. This last stretch of road will follow approximately the same route as the present road on up through Jlnney Beck and Bear flats and onto the head of tne Mammoth, to connect with the road around the Cedar Breaks at the monument boundary. The National Na-tional Parks Service is pushing construction of the road around the Breaks this summer and we understand it will be completed and ready for oiling by next year. The rim road is being built as a part of the Mission 66 program. The next to final piece of road in Uie Parowan Main Canyon, designated as Highway No. 143 on the secondary road system, sys-tem, is being finished this summer. sum-mer. This short piece of road, entailing en-tailing heavy construction, was started last summer and is now being graveled, preparatory to oiling and finishing. It should be completed before fall. I With the allocation of funds for the construction of the final piece of the road from Parowan to the Cedar Breaks marks the beginning of the end to a long campaign to get an oiled road to this scenic attraction. With the completion of this road it will put the Cedar Breaks National Na-tional Monument within 16 miles of Highway 91, and make It possible pos-sible for any traveler along this highway to make tho loop from Parowan. around the Breaks and down to Cdar City In a matter of a few hours. |
