Show ENTER SECTIONAL TOURNEY Cedar City fill-Star Team Vins State Little League Championship Cedar City National Little League All-stars won the Utah state championship Saturday with a 5 to 2 win over Juab. Monday Mon-day the 14-man team, managers, parents and friends left for Colorado Col-orado Springs, Colo, where they participated Wednesday evening in a sectional tournament Sectional tourney pittel the Utah champs from Cedar City .against the Colorado State champions cham-pions with the winner to enter the divisional tournament, also "being staged at Colorado Springs today, Thursday. Top Pitcher Robert Barrlck was the winning win-ning pitcher In the championship game. He allowed two runs on two hits in the first Inning of play, allowed only one hit In the second and blanked the visiting all-stars from Juab in the final four innings to allow only three hits. Curtis Anderson shared honors in the contest as he parked a three-run homer over the left field fence In the first Inning of play. Juab jumped off to an early lead with Mike Morgan doubling to start the game, a walk given up by Barrick put two men on. Morgan went to third on a passed pass-ed ball and scored on a deep fly by Dick Roundy. A sincle by Tom i Garfield scored a second run in the top half of the first Inning. Make Comeback Cedar bounced back in the bottom bot-tom half, however. Brent Averett, leadoff man, lived on an error and a walk put Ken Duerksen on first and moved Averett to second. sec-ond. Anderson, third man in the Cedar batting order, then homer-' homer-' ed to put Cedar out In front 3 to 2. Neither team scored through ; the second and third Innings but Cedar scored two Insurance runs , In the bothon of the fourth. Barrick Bar-rick got on on an error to start ; the inning and Ken Parker laid ; down a bunt single to put runners run-ners on f'rst and second. A passed pass-ed ball moved Barrlck to third and he scored on an error on the I catcher. Parker then scored on a ; single by Ken Duerksen. Neither team scored In the fifth 1 or sixth frames. On the mound for the losers was Dick Roundy who in losing allowed only four hits to the Cedar City team. Defeat St George Cedar won its way 'Into the championship game by posting a 21 to 6 win over the St George Sunset league entry in the opening open-ing round then defeating Mil-ford Mil-ford 6 to 2 in the semi-finals. Juab defeated Beaver 9 to 5 In the opening day of play then downed Cedar Little League All-stars All-stars 8 to 3 in the second round of play to advance to the championship cham-pionship game. In other action of the tournament tourna-ment Cedar American Leaguers won their way Into the semi-finals witth a thrilling 5 to 2 win over the St George Sunrise league entry In the opening day of the tournament in a game that went into extra Innings. St. George pushed over one run In the fourth inning to take a 1 to 0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning Cedar loaded the bases with one out. Mike Petty singled to drive In the tying run to force the game into an extra Inning. Randy Bowler, the St. George pitcher, promptly put his team back In the lead with a home run to move out In front 2 to 1. Game Tied Up In the bottom of the seventh Cedar loaded the bases and Brad Isom scored from third on a passed pass-ed ball to tie the game up at 2-all. 2-all. David Myers then homered with two men on to end the game with a 5 to 2 victory. Randy Ran-dy Bowler was the starter for St. George and Roger Stratton for Cedar. Ce-dar. Both were removed midway in the game with David Hair coming In for Cedar to take the win. Fish was charged with the loss. Second day losers, Cedar American Amer-ican and Mllford,. played for consolation con-solation honors with Cedar coming com-ing out on the long end by a score of 9 to 5. Winn Isom, David Hair and Roger Stratton shared mount duties for Cedar in picking pick-ing up the win. Mllford outhit the Cedar team 9 to 6 and picked up a two-run homer off the bat of Gary Tomslk, plus three doubles. Cedar's hits were all held to singles but 11 walks given giv-en up by Mllford aided the winning win-ning cause for Cedar. Juab Tory Ahead In the opening game of the tournament Juab picked up three unearned runs in the first inning in-ning of play and added six tallies tal-lies on four hits in the second to defeat Beaver 9 to 5. Roundy was the winning pitcher and Mike Riley was the loser. Robert Earrlck held St. George scoreless in the first three Innings In-nings and Robert Smith came on in relief for the final three In nings. St George was held to four hits and Arthur Hall, the starter, was charged with the loss. Hall, however, picked up two the four hits for his team. In thr second round of play Cedar scored two runs In the first Inning on three hits, added two In the second and two In the third to defeat Mllford 6 to 2. Curtis Anderson on the mound for the Cedar Nationals was effective ef-fective with his slow curve, holding Mllford to only three hits. Mllford scored one run In the first and one In the second, with Anderson shutting them out in the final four frames. Cedar collected nine hits. Including a two run homer by Barrlck In the second Inning. Juab advanced to the championship cham-pionship on a homerun filled contest against Cedar American. For Cedar Mark Hunter and Russell Rus-sell Shirts homered, both with no one o Dick Roundy collected collect-ed two horne runs for Juab and Gary Howard added a third. On the mound for Cedar were starter Mark Hunter, and Prad Isom. Randy Painter was the starter for Juab with Mike Morgan Mor-gan finishing out. Trailing only 5 to 3 in the sixth Cedar Intentionally walked Roundy, who had hit two home runs earlier to load the bases. A single by Bobby Shepherd and an error allowed three runs to score, giving Juab an 8 to 3 win. |
